Description technique

The contaminant is degradated by a transfer of electrons from the contaminant to an inserted reduced compound. Zero valent iron is often used, for example as nano or granular iron in a permeable reactive barrier. The degradation of the contamination is mainly microbial facilitated.

Applicability
In situ chemical reduction can be applied to any reducible compounds, including chlorinated hydrocarbons (CVOC), chromium (VI) and arsenic (V). The technique can only be applied for the saturated zone of the soil. The permeability of the soil should be moderately to well for this technique.
Comments
The duration of this technique is entirely dependent on the extent of the contamination and whether the source is still present or not. The duration varies from several months to many years. The disturbance of the site is low.
