Summary

Case submitted by: NTP Milieu
Country: The Netherlands
Built-up site?: Yes
Soil type: Mainly sand; layers of clay and or peat
Follow-up required?: Yes: to prove establishment of a stable end situation.
Treated contamination: CVOC
Medium contamination: Groundwater
Dimension contamination: 110,00 [m3] exceeded the T-value (specific Dutch target value)
Remediation goal:
a)Stable end situation
b)Maximum concentrations
PCE: 20 µg/l
TCE: 262 µg/l
cis-DCE: 10 µg/l
VC: 2,5 µg/l
c) > 95% removal of load
Remediation goal achieved?: Yes: Phase 1, 3, 4 and 5 have been finished. For phase 2 and 6, Cis is exceeding the remediation value to a limited extend (resp 11 and 17 µg/l).
Initial and final concentration or load removal:
PCE Initial concentration: 11.000 end concentration: < 20 µg/l
TCE Initial concentration: 54 end concentration: < 262 µg/l
Cis-DCE Initial concentration: 690 end concentration: 17 µg/l
VC Initial concentration: 0,1 end concentration: < 2,5 µg/l
Active remediation phase: May 2009 to January 2011, in phases.

Case detailed information

General information
Project name: Anaerobic bioremediation of CVOC (The Hague)*** Case submitted by: NTP Milieu Contact: Mr G.B.J. Borggreve Address: Postbus 6280, 7503 GG Enschede, The Netherlands Telephone number: +31 53 4614905 Email-address: g.borggreve@ntp-enschede.nl
Location
Country: The Netherlands City/region/county: Boreelstraat in Den Haag (The Hague), provincie Zuid Holland (future) use of location: Residential area Built-up location during the active remediation phase?: Yes
Technique
Explanation technique: The TCE-concept has been applied for ex situ cultivation of Dehalococcoides ethenogenes bacteria. Because of the lengths of the plume, the project has been devided into 6 phases. Also other remediation techniques applied?: Yes: in the remaining (small) source zone, bio-augmentation has been applied. After care needed?: Yes: to prove establishment of a stable end situation. Rationale for the chosen technique: Enhanced anaerobic degradation (bioremediation) was choosen as the most suitable solution for remediation of CVOC contamination in groundwater in a built-on environment.
Contamination
Treated contaminant(s): CVOC Contaminant phase: Groundwater Size contamination: 110,00 [m3] exceeded the T-value (specific Dutch target value) Depth contamination: 6-11 and 12-16 m below surface level
Soil
Soil type: Mainly sand; layers of clay and or peat Saturated/unsaturated zone?: Saturated zone Permeability: > 0,1 m/day, based on field data Flow velocity or gradient groundwater: 17 m/year; 1.2 m/km
Result, duration, expense

Additional information
Lessons learned: The injection of the substrate was performed accoring to the remediation plan. In the water, oxigen was present in a low concentration. The addition of bisulfite made the water completely anaerobic. Remarks: The project has been finished without major problems and according to schedule.
